Best parties in Weligama & Ahangama: a local’s guide
I started Sugar Co-living five years ago, and in that time I have been to most of the parties on this stretch of coast. The south coast does not have one sound. Every venue plays its own rhythm, and everyone has different taste, so here is where I actually go, which night, and how to get there without overpaying.

Hakuna Matata, Ahangama — my favourite
If I could only go to one party on this coast, it would be Hakuna Matata on a Thursday or a Sunday. Most nights it keeps going until 3 or 4 in the morning. The music is mostly house and afro house, and there is a live drummer who plays over the DJ — that is what makes the room move.
It is right on the beach, so you look out at the sea, and it is not too hot inside. Everyone is welcome here: travellers from every country and Sri Lankans alike. You will also see a lot of Indian travellers these days, because the DJs drop some well-known Indian dance tracks and the crowd loves it.
It works for almost everyone. Come as a couple, have a nice dinner with a bottle of wine, then join the party. Come as a group and take over the beanbags on the beach deck. Food and drink prices are reasonable — about what you would pay in a normal restaurant. Entry on party nights is around Rs 2,000 (September 2026).
Ocean Bliss guests always come back recommending it. I am just as impressed by how professional the team is.
The Doctor’s House, Madiha — Wednesday hostel night
My second favourite is The Doctor’s House, a surf hostel in Madiha with one of the biggest parties on the coast. Wednesday is hostel night with a DJ; Saturday has a live band.
Entry is normally Rs 2,000. Because Ocean Bliss has a hostel too, our Ocean Bliss and Zen Koggala guests pay Rs 1,000 on Wednesday hostel night. Ask our front desk before you go.
It is further away: about 15 km from Ocean Bliss and about 30 km from Zen Koggala. Expect to pay around US$5–15 each way depending on where you start. Getting there is the cheap part; coming back late at night costs a little more, so use the tuk-tuk tip below.
Shima Guni Beach Club — the after-party
When the Doctor’s House winds down around midnight, the party moves to Shima Guni Beach Club, also in Madiha. It runs on the same Wednesday and Saturday nights, with a pool and a beach setting. DJ NjaySL is one of my favourite artists here — he plays most of the newest tracks. There is a separate entry charge.
Different nights, different rhythms
The best part of this coast is that you can pick your music. Hakuna Matata is house and afro with drums. The Doctor’s House is a hostel crowd with a DJ or a band. Shima Guni is club hits after midnight. And if you want something harder, The Secret Pearl near Weligama runs jungle parties with techno, hard groove and psy — it is strictly 21+ and you need photo ID.
Try more than one. Each night feels like a different trip.
Getting there and back without overpaying
You can book Uber or PickMe, but at night you may wait a long time for a car. My tip is simpler: open the Uber or PickMe app, look at the price it shows, and show that amount to a local tuk-tuk driver. Most drivers are friendly and will agree to the same price, and you do not have to wait.
- Ocean Bliss to Hakuna Matata: about 3 km — a short tuk-tuk ride.
- Zen Koggala to Hakuna Matata: about 7 km.
- To Madiha (Doctor’s House and Shima Guni): about 15 km from Ocean Bliss, about 30 km from Zen Koggala — around US$5–15 each way.
- On a budget: the bus from Weligama to Madiha costs only about US$0.50, and three people sharing a tuk-tuk can pay around US$5 in total.
- Buses stop late at night, so plan your ride home before you start dancing.

What is the best party night in Weligama?
For me it is Thursday or Sunday at Hakuna Matata in Ahangama, about 3 km from Ocean Bliss. It usually goes until 3 or 4 am with house, afro house and a live drummer.
Which nights are the parties in Madiha?
The Doctor’s House has a DJ hostel night on Wednesday and a live band on Saturday. Shima Guni Beach Club runs the after-party on the same nights, after midnight.
How much does it cost to get in?
Around Rs 2,000 at Hakuna Matata and The Doctor’s House on party nights (September 2026). Ocean Bliss and Zen Koggala guests pay Rs 1,000 at The Doctor’s House on Wednesday — ask our front desk. Shima Guni and The Secret Pearl charge their own entry.
Is it good for couples?
Yes. At Hakuna Matata you can have a relaxed dinner with wine by the sea and then join the party — it is one of the best date nights on the coast.
